The Ice Palace register

In the northern city of Harbin the river freezes a metre thick, and each January a palace of ice blocks is built the size of a town. Its towers and walls of clear blue-white ice are cut from the river and glow from within, and the air is so cold the ice rings. The pack puts the architect at that palace.

The colour is ice blue in every value, from clear white to deep glacial. A pale ice-blue wool coat over a white cashmere knit is the line, with the ice towers' stacked block silhouette behind. She stands before a wall of clear blue ice blocks, rests a gloved hand on the cold clear face of a block at a tower's base, and stands on the packed snow of the avenue with the towers glowing against the twilight. The light is cold and soft, from the ice and from one side.
