The Mameluke of the Guard register

The Mameluke pack draws on the Tuileries and Austerlitz, 1804 to 1814 — the Mamelukes of the Imperial Guard brought back from Egypt, a white turban over a red cap, a green vest laced in gold, a cashmere sash with a scimitar. The value is the Orient placed at the Emperor's own shoulder.

Photographically the register runs warm candle-and-gilt at a palace door, cold cannon-smoke on the field, and amber brazier light in the tent — three real scenes of one guard, not one look repeated. The palette holds the white turban, green velvet, gold lace and crimson throughout.
