This pack borrows its register from a winter quay at dusk: heavily fulled wool melton, sheared so short it reads as felt, dyed the one navy the sea took. The wardrobe is navy from collar to knee — a double-breasted peacoat, a melton waistcoat, melton trousers, a wool watch cap — against a navy steel hull and navy bollards, so the picture reads as one navy with the face its only warmth.

Photographically the separation is ton sur ton: garment and ground share the hue, and texture, specular highlight, and the direction of light carry it instead — cold dusk light lets a painted hull give back a wet gloss the melton's dead nap refuses, flat overcast sea light separates a coiled rope's lay from a felted waistcoat, low backlight rims a coat shoulder against a dark plane of water.
