This pack borrows its register from the Kojima mill and the raw-selvedge culture around it: unwashed 14-ounce selvedge straight off the shuttle loom, the rope-dyed warp still chalky with loose indigo, the weft white underneath. The wardrobe is denim on denim — jacket, shirt, straight jeans with the cuffs turned to show the selvedge line — and the room around the sitter is denim too, so the picture reads as one deep blue with the face as its only other colour.

Photographically the separation is ton sur ton: garment and ground share the hue, and texture, specular highlight, and the direction of light do the work colour normally would — a hard north window rakes twill against a flat bolt wall, a bare bulb pools chalky nap against oiled iron, low sun lays a sheen across a jacket back while the shirt stays matte. One brass rivet is the only glint in the frame.
