This pack draws on the Sultana register — dark hair under a jewelled cap and a sheer pearl-sewn veil, a gold brocade kaftan with a pearl-embroidered collar, ropes of pearls, a signet ring, a small ivory baton. The palette runs pearl white, gold, Nile green, Cairo ochre, and screen shadow — the vocabulary of the former slave who commanded Egypt's defense at Mansura and then ruled it outright, the only woman to hold the Cairo throne in her own name in the Islamic Middle Ages.

Three situations carry the register: standing behind a carved wooden war-tent screen, stepping to its edge into full light with messengers' letters on the table; seated on the Cairo throne in gold brocade and the pearl veil, a coin bearing her own name held up before bowing emirs; at a lattice balcony over the Nile at evening, veil back, pearls catching the light, feluccas below.
