This pack borrows its register from a tea house furnished entirely in jade: silk charmeuse in the green of nephrite, the only cloth that holds light like a wet stone, against jade-green lacquered screens, jade cushions, and a jade celadon service. The wardrobe is jade silk from shoulder to floor — a slip gown, a qipao-cut dress, a blouse with wide trousers — so the picture reads as one green held across silk, lacquer, and glaze, with the face its only other colour.

Photographically the separation is ton sur ton: garment and ground share the hue, and texture, specular highlight, and the direction of light carry it instead — soft window light draws one liquid highlight down charmeuse while lacquer gives a hard small glint and celadon a soft one, diffuse light separates a dress's smooth face from a curtain's crêpe drape, cool daylight backlights a blouse's edge to a pale glow against a cushion's dense brocade.
