The Timbuktu Scholar register
This pack draws on the Sahel-scholar register — a grey or dark beard, an indigo turban wound with a tail, a white cotton boubou, leather sandals, a manuscript in a leather satchel, a reed pen and inkpot. The palette runs indigo, white cotton, manuscript brown, mud-brick, and Niger blue — the vocabulary of Sankore, the medieval university city whose learning was Mali's other face beside Mansa Musa's gold.
Three situations carry the register: seated cross-legged on a mat in a mud-brick courtyard with a manuscript of geometric diagrams open on a stand, students in white around; standing on the Niger riverbank at evening with manuscripts under one arm, a pirogue on the water, the sky orange; standing before shelves of leather-bound manuscripts, holding one open to a page of gold-and-red script in a shaft of window light.
