The wardrobe is expedition kit in the ground's own colours — a sand-coloured linen shirt over ochre trousers with a sand keffiyeh, a sand canvas field jacket over an ochre knit, an ochre wool robe worn open across sand linen. Hair short, a beard. The whole frame runs sand, ochre, red sand and rust sandstone, and the single black cord of the headdress is the only thing in the picture that breaks rank.

Three takes carry the nine. Standing on a rippled dune with a hand raised against the light, in the sand linen shirt and ochre trousers.
