The Alaia register

The old medina of Tunis, where the master was born, is all whitewashed walls and studded blue doors, a courtyard of white columns, jasmine, and a hard North African sun that makes every white blaze. His white cotton was stiff and clean: a laced corset bodice over a full white skirt with eyelet, the waist drawn in. The pack dresses you in it, every white from blazing whitewash to eyelet shadow.

You stand before a whitewashed wall with the laced bodice at the collarbone, rest a hand on a cool column in a white-columned courtyard with the corset's waist and the eyelet in view, and stand in the lane at half-length with a far blue door behind you. The sun is hard and bounced bright off the white walls. The mood is a woman in a city of her own colour.
