This pack borrows its register from an old wood-panelled lecture hall in autumn: cotton cut into wales, so the cloth is stripes of pile and stripes of shadow — rust corduroy reads darker along every rib and brighter along every crest. The wardrobe is corduroy from jacket to trouser — a wide-wale suit over a needlecord shirt, a blazer with a knit tie, an overcoat — against rust oak panelling and rust leather seats, so the picture reads as one rust at every depth with the face its only other colour.
