The The Courtyard register
Louis Kahn built the Salk Institute at La Jolla as a monastery for biologists: two rows of concrete laboratories, teak study bays and a travertine courtyard with a single channel of water running toward the Pacific. It is one of the great rooms of modern architecture, and a scientist works in it.
Three photographs. In a teak study bay above the courtyard, a silvered panel and a concrete edge behind you. Seated on the travertine bench at the courtyard's edge with forearms on your knees. And at half-length beside the water channel, the axis running away between the two rows of towers into the haze.
The pack is held to one warm grey: travertine, board-formed concrete and teak weathered to silver, with a linen jacket and a travertine-coloured knit. The light is flat marine light, and the warmth of the skin is the only colour in the frame.
How to take source photos for the The Courtyard pack
Better source photos make better portraits. A few things sharpen the likeness before the wardrobe and the setting go on top.
- Even, soft lightStand near a window with indirect daylight on your face. Avoid overhead bulbs and phone flash; both flatten the face.
- Front or three-quarter angleCamera at eye level, facing it or turned slightly. No shot from below, no wide-angle close-up.
- Face fully clearHair off the face, no hats or sunglasses. A clear, front-facing photo gives the most of you to work with.
- Still, thoughtful, unforcedThe courtyard rewards stillness. A quiet, level expression in your source photos suits the cloister.
- Plain background is fineDo not worry about your own backdrop. The pack's three settings replace it entirely.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this the real Salk Institute?
- The setting is built from it: the travertine court, the water channel, the concrete laboratories and the teak study bays. The portrait is of you.
- Do I need to wear a lab coat?
- No. The wardrobe is a linen jacket over a knit, which suits a researcher meeting a funder as well as one at the bench.
- Why such a restrained palette?
- The courtyard is one warm grey, and the pack keeps to it so that the face is what the eye finds first.
- Will the photos look like me?
- Every photo looks like you, well photographed. If one is nearly right, say what to change, in your own words.
- Do I have to write a prompt?
- No. There is nothing to write: you pick a pack, and it is ready in seconds.
- How many photos of myself do I add?
- Between six and twenty, from different days and in different light, with your face clear. We check each one when you add it.
- What happens to the photos I add?
- They are used only to create your model, on our own servers in the European Union. They are not shared and not sold.
When the The Courtyard pack fits
- A scientist headshot for a university or institute staff page
- A biotech professional portrait for a company site, an investor deck or a funding application
- A researcher headshot for a journal profile, a lab group page or a conference badge
- A portrait for an author page or a book jacket in the sciences
- A profile for anyone who prefers a calm, architectural picture to a lab-coat cliché
About narcis
Most AI photo tools put every pose, job, era, and style in one giant catalog. The photos all look like every other AI photo on the internet — a glaze over a stock face. Narcis goes the other way. One job: photos of you that look like photographs. You add at least 6 photos of yourself, and we create your AI model from them. Your photos are ready in a few hours, and we email you when they are. Then this pack and every other pack on Narcis can be made with your face. Each pack is curated against real references — paintings, photographers, places — and tested on real faces before it goes live. Built and run by one small team, on our own servers.
